The Seabrook
Nuclear Power Plant
Since December of 1968 when plans to build a nuclear power plant in Seabrook, NH were announced, there has been debate
and controversy.
Summary:
The Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power plant in New England. It had the potential to be the
largest nuclear power plant in the world. What started as local opposition to the power plant due to NIMBY sentiments, grew
to a national issue after the Three Mile Island meltdown brought the American public’s attention to the dangers of nuclear
power. Other important factors include the tax benefits which the power plant gives the local towns, the evacuation issues
due to seasonal fluctuations in population, the jobs Seabrook provide, etc. After years of controversy Seabrook Unit One began
operating in 1990. Unit Two was never completed.
The class discussion should focus on whether the plant should be allowed to expand its current operation as has been
proposed.
